What DNA Testing Works can Tell You?
There are already countless of people who have tried DNA testing to find out about their ancestry. And testing kits are becoming more and more popular. In reality, there are more people who’ve used consumer DNA tests than the reports gathered in the years before 2018. Many people these days indulge in DNA testing that it is forecasted to grow at around 100 million users in the next couple of years.
The hype for DNA testing is there but the question that people are wondering is, how it truly works?
There is no straightforward answer here since the company releasing such kits is using proprietary algorithms in handling DNA data. On the other hand, there are a number of things that you have to be aware of if you are really interested to try DNA testing. The basics first, DNA tests could help in revealing secrets or discover things that you weren’t new.
There are a number of things in which DNA test can tell a person similar to where a person roughly came from, how closely you’re related to other members who are in the database and if you have specific traits. What you would get will depend on what you have ordered but, one thing is for sure, you can learn whether you’re half of something and the other.
There are two things that are used to check the DNA and these are the provider’s code and spit of a person. The spit part as what you would see is self-explanatory already. You will be spitting into a tube and send it back to the provider and then, it’s the provider’s job to extract DNA from the sample and digitize it so by that, it will be stored in the database and create a profile.
By the time when it has been digitized, DNA exists as string of 4 nucleobases of DNA which includes C, G, T and A. This is where the proprietary algorithm of the provider will kick in to carry out DNA testing and it is where things are more complex.
Algorithms used here are so advanced and complex that it can pull out C’s, G’s, T’s, and A’s. After that, they can derive the meaning by finding patterns. Every company uses pattern-spotting algorithm to which everything remains a secret. The thing is, there are approximately 600,000 positions to which human DNA codes differ and this also referred to as single-nucleotide polymorphisms.
By the time when the DNA testing is done, it is forwarded to the DNA library where it is joined by other DNAs and from this point, it can tell you where your DNA came from.
